This is a small ammonite fossil.    THE AMMONITE PICTURED IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE IF YOU PURCHASE THIS ITEM.   You will not receive the ammonite pictured, but one of similar size and quality.  These fossils are typically between 3/4 to 1 inch in length.

Ammonites were prehistoric marine creatures related to the modern day cuttlefish, squid, and octopus family.  Ammonites are called cephalopods because their heads and tentacles protruded out of the same opening; they grew by building larger chambers onto their shells.  Ammonites first appeared during the Devonian period, 400 million years ago, and went extinct during the Cretaceous, 65 million years ago.
