These are really unique fossils called a brain endocast.  A brain endocast is basically a visible mold of an animal's brain.  It is formed when an animal dies, the brain decomposes, and then sediment fills the empty brain cavity and fossilizes.   When the bone around the brain cavity is removed, you can see the brain endocast inside. This is a lot of 2 endocasts.  One is from a mammal called an Oreodont, which lived during the Oligocene time period, approximately 30 million years ago.  The Oredodont endocast measures 1 1/2 inches in length, 1 1/2 inches in width, and 3/4 inches in height.  The other endocast is from a Hesperocyon, which also lived during the Oligocene time period, approximately 42 million years ago.  It measures 2 inches in length, 1 3/4 inches in length, and 3/4 inches in height.

These are interesting and educational fossils! We have a variety of other fossils! Please check us out!
