Details

This unique fossil is a Metaxytherium vertebra.  Metaxytherium is an extinct genus of dugong or "sea cow" that lived from the Miocene time period until the end of the Pliocene.  Fossil remains have been found in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.  This animal had a fusiform body with two paddle-like flippers, but no dorsal fin or hind limbs.  It also had a fluked, dolphin-like tail.  These aquatic herbivores lived in warm coastal waters and inland waterways, feeding on seagrass. This fossil is 10 million years old and came from Bone Valley, Florida, USA.  This fossil is from a very old collection that has been in storage since the 1970s.  This is a great piece for any collection.  This vertebra fossil measures 5 inches in width, 4inches in length, and  2 3/4 inches in height.  It also comes with a nice information card.

We have a variety of other fossils.  Check out our other listings!
