Details

This is a neat lot of fossil pectens from Santa Ana Canyon, California. Pectens are large scallops or saltwater clams. The name Pecten is from the Latin word for “comb or rake”. Since 1904, a Pecten shell has been used as the basis of the logo of Shell Petroleum Company. Fossil shells within this genus have been found all over the world. Pectens have existed from the Cretaceous period, around 70 million years ago, to the present day. These fossils are likely from the Miocene time period, around 17 million years ago. They are from a very old collection and have been in storage since the 1970’s.
