Up for sale is a nice fossil plate with Scyphocrinites Elegans crinoids from Morocco, North Africa. This piece weighs 9 pounds 13.6 ounces and measures 11 1/2 inches in length, 11 1/2 inches in width, and 1 inch in height. It dates back to the Silurian time period, approximately 420 million years ago. This is a great specimen for any collection!
Crinoids, commonly called sea lilies, are marine animals that are related to starfish, brittle stars, and sea urchins. Most crinoids attach themselves to the sea floor by a stem and then use feathery feeding arms to sweep food into their mouths. They live in both shallow waters and in depths as great as 30,000 ft.
